Kate and Steve Fricker at Wohelo in 1960.
Steve Fricker passed away this May.  We will miss him around Wohelo.

Stephen J. Fricker, M.D. of Lexington passed away on May 21, 2007. He was 80 years old. He was born in England, the son of John Henry Fricker and Lillian Bradfield Fricker. Elementary and secondary school education were in England, as was his undergraduate BS degree at University College, London. In 1949 he came to the United States to study at MIT, where he received a masters (1951) and a doctoral degree (1953) in electrical engineering. He worked for several years at Lincoln Laboratories, where he was involved in the reflection of radio waves from the ionosphere and from the moon. Concern about possible harmful effects of microwaves on human eyes led to an interest in medicine and to medical school at Yale, where he received an MD degree in 1962. He did his internship at Maine Medical Center and his residency in ophthalmology at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary (MEEI).

Dr. Fricker remained at MEEI after his residency, developing equipment to measure signal strength between the eye and the brain. He soon started seeing patients, specializing in pediatric ophthalmology and surgical correction of eye muscle problems. Until February of this year he continued working part time in the pediatric eye clinic and assisting in the training of residents. He was at MEEI for over 40 years.

Outside of work, Dr. Fricker's hobbies included flying and travel. He flew remote control model airplanes for many years, and received his private pilot's license after retirement. He traveled with his wife to many countries around the world, including Turkey, Russia, China, Norway, Switzerland, Spain, Tobago and Peru. Dr. Fricker enjoyed fixing things. He was also interested in woodworking and the construction of complex electrical devices. He loved classical music, and he did extensive reading on world history and politics.
